Maine Wedding Photographer

Maine Wedding Photographer | Lover of Maine | A Woman of Style

On a breezy spring day, overlooking the Portland Bay, I met with Emilie Sommer of emilie inc {maine wedding photographer}. We instantly fell into catching up like old friends, while chatting all things business, life, style and of course weddings in her stunning {bright and cheery} mill building office in downtown Portland, Maine.

As I have stated in previous vendor spotlights, I am excruciatingly passionate about highlighting wedding professionals I love myself. Yes, they are crazy talented, but they are also people with big hearts who care deeply about their business, and their clients. Emilie, Inc. Photography is not only one of the premier wedding photography companies in Maine, but Emilie herself is a class act and someone everyone would be happy to know.

Heidi: Tell me how you landed in Maine and what has kept you here?

Emilie: While living in Washington, DC, I came to Maine to visit a friend. Three months later, I moved! Portland grabbed a hold of me and hasn’t let me go. There’s something so magical about the coast, about the arts and foodie community, the exciting hum about town and incredible lifestyle living here offers. Previously I worked in DC at USA Today and the Washington Post as a photographer and photo editor. I loved that chapter of my life, too, but nothing beats the sound of the seagulls calling outside my window.

Heidi: How would you define your unique style and edge?

Emilie: I knew in high school that photography was the career path I was headed down. I earned a degree in photojournalism from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and moved to DC right after graduating. For me, there’s no other style than photojournalism in my wedding work. I believe wholeheartedly that when you look a photograph you shouldn’t be made to ask yourself if it is a real or fabricated moment or scene. Weddings are inherently emotionally beautiful events, each rich with its own unique story, relationships and moments. It’s important to me to respect and capture that authenticity.

Heidi: You have a team of photographers around you, how does that enhance the experience of your couples when they want to work with emilie inc?

Emilie: I have been photographing weddings for 11 years. Five years ago, when my legs were firmly planted under me and I had just opened my dream studio in Portland, I received the best bit of business advice from a treasured mentor: when your business is meant to grow, the right people will find you to make it happen. Lo and behold, I was fortunate to have an incredible host of talent walk through that door. Photographers, graphic designers, videographer, studio managers… it’s been a fun ride so far! Currently we have four active additional photographers, all practicing the same photojournalism style. Couples choose their photographer based on personal preference, availability or budget, and each receives the same emilie inc. experience throughout the process.

Heidi: Your office is amazing, your style is amazing…..what inspires you with design/color/style?

Emilie: The signature emilie inc. pink and brown logo was born in 2005. I prefer a clean, modern aesthetic in my personal life and in my work, so it was easy to translate this to all of the touch-points of the business, either in person or online. I worked with interior designer Tracy Davis of Urban Dwellings in Portland on furnishings, Tide Creative on our new website, and our graphic designer Alina with Gus & Ruby Letterpress on printed pieces. I’m slightly obsessed with light, architecture and pattern, all of which come into play in my everyday and while photographing.

Heidi: Lets offer a free tip from you. What is something every couple should know before their wedding day?

Emilie: That moment – the one when the officiant pronounces you married, and you turn to face your guests – at no other time in your life will you ever feel so much love and grace from all of those joyful, supportive people cheering you on. Pause to feel it, soak in all of those good wishes and blessings.

Heidi: Tell us a small something not many people know about you.

Emilie: I met my husband in Vegas. Fortunately, what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas! He was living in California and moved to Maine after dating cross-country. We’ve been married for five years and have two beautiful children, William and Clara June.
